Choosing to go to a treatment program for drug or alcohol addition is a big step in and of itself. But choosing what facility is the best for you can be confusing, as they all offer different services and benefits. So in order to choose the best one for you, here are some questions you should ask about the drug treatment program before you enroll.
What am I hoping to get out of the program?
Each different facility determines success in a variety of ways depending on the type of addiction. Methadone addiction treatment centers may determine success based off of switching from recreational use of the drug to strictly prescription use, whereas alcohol addiction treatment centers may require you to pass a 12 step program. It all depends on what is right for you in the long run.
Is the treatment long term or short term?
The most popular form of drug therapy is the 28 day program, but this can vary. Depending on the severity of the situation, the facility may require you to stay a longer amount of time in order to achieve a stable level of sobriety.
Does this drug treatment include the use of other drugs to combat the addiction?
It is a common practice to use drugs that help to combat addictive elements of the drug within the brain. These are often referred to as harm reduction programs, and will train you on the proper steps necessary needed to quit. Some examples of these drugs include buprenorphine, Suboxone, or ibogaine.
Does the program have methods for alleviating physical cravings for drugs and/or alcohol?
It is important to understand that many drug treatment programs do not offer a direct way to deal with the physical side effects of withdrawal. Instead they choose to use support meetings, exercise, healthy living habits, and prescription medication to alleviate the cravings.
Does the program come with a nutritional aspect?
Addicts typically arrive at their treatment facilities in poor states of health. Generally the center will have a nutritional system put in place in order to bring the patient back to full health.
These questions will give you an idea of how each treatment facility is set up. And now, the choice is yours. Go ahead, and get healthy!
