As the winter season is slowly coming to its end, perhaps it is time to evaluate your closet to see if there is anything you need to throw out. Perhaps there is a coat that you no longer wear, leggings or tights that have grown a bit too tight, or you would just like to clear out some space in your closet. Fortunately for you there are several organizations that pick up donations so you don’t have to go out into the cold. But if you need that extra push to brave the cold here are several reasons why you should consider clothing donations:

1.Lots of Americans Purchase Used Clothing – You may think that no one would ever purchase clothing from a thrift shop, but you’d be wrong. The average American buys 10 pounds of second hand clothing annually in the United States. Not only do you get a stylish piece of clothing, but you get it for cheap!

2. Tax Deductibles! – Did you know that in 2007, an estimated $5.8 billion of clothing related donations were given to charity foundations in the United States? This means that all of those sweaters, jackets, leggings, and gloves that you no longer want can add up to extra savings when you do your taxes. These charitable donations will go to families in need, and will help you save some money towards tax season.

3. Save the Environment – An estimated 12 million tons of clothing waste is sent to American landfills. This means that an average person sends 4.5 pounds of trash everyday. What’s more, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that 75 percent of waste is recyclable, but Americans only recycle 30 of their waste. All of this waste could go towards clothing children in need, the blind, or low income families. Instead of your turning your clothes into waste, turn them into charity donations.

So Where Can I Donate Clothes? There are several options. Some charities do donation pickups, where you leave your clothing in a bag on the sidewalk, and the charities come pick them up. Or if you’d rather hand the donations in person, there are several donation drop off locations that will accept your clothing donations. This way you’ll be sure to get a receipt for tax season.

Not everyone is fortunate to have a closet full of clothes. If you find that your closet is getting too crowded make some clothing donations. Find a nearby charity and make a donation today!
