Kids are writing letters to our troops and doing their part to cheer up deployed soldiers. “Thanks for protecting our country. [You] must be very brave joining the military. They say a man looks handsome in uniform,” a letter by one young girl begins. “My favorite food is chicken wings, and I like to hang out with my friends.”
Although the letters may seem silly — when it comes down to it — kids have the right idea. That is, helping military families does not have to be expensive or burdensome. Pitch in without taking too much time away from your busy schedule — and without breaking the bank. Here’s how:
Get People Together For Good Food
Few people will say no to good food. Ask friends and family to pitch in to host a community event benefiting military families, soldiers, and/or veterans. Potluck dinners, pancake breakfasts, and barbecues are all popular options. Working together should help any one person from feeling bogged down or overwhelmed with responsibility.
Donate Clothes From Home
Supporting our troops can be almost unbelievably easy. If you are especially busy, there are still plenty of options for you to contribute to charities. Look into charities that pick up clothing donations right from your home, for example. Organizations that pick up clothes and other donated items from communal locations — such as schools, offices, and churches — are also convenient, especially if you’re pressed for time.
Offer Help, and Be Creative About It, Too!
Giving back to our troops doesn’t necessarily have to cost money. If cash is tight, consider volunteering your time to help military husbands and wives. This is especially helpful for prideful families. It can be humiliating to ask for help — so don’t wait! Proactively lend a hand, and take the burden of asking off military spouses’ shoulders. Draw up coupons good for “one night of babysitting,” “two hours of help with errands,” or “two hours of lawn mowing,” one military mom suggests.
Show your support for our soldiers — without paying too much out of pocket or investing unreasonable amounts of time. Look into charities that pick up clothing donations, gift coupons offering to help, or throw together a group event benefiting military families.
